This column will be a regular feature of the Whittier Songwriter and we hope to bring you meaningful reviews of artist who are either Whittier residents or are connected with the area in some way. In this way we hope to promote local artists in their endeavors and we hope you will support them with the zeal that the home town artists deserve. (That means, buy their CD!!)

Our review this month is "Acoustic Tales" by Whittier resident Echo Graywolf, released in 2001. Simply put, this collection consists of ten songs of sheer acoustic picking delight, all done in one take! No overdubs or fancy studio tricks here. As a matter of fact, you probably have seen and heard Echo around town (good places to look are Starbucks or Memo's) playing the same songs in the same way.

The ten songs in the collection are all originals written by Echo and played in his semi-classical-folk-new age style. "Stained Glass Window," the first cut in the album, starts with a pop sounding melody before it develops into a fine almost classical piece. Others, such as #5 Bottle of pop, have a more folksy sound. One of my favorites is #6, Pirate's Dance, as I really likes the riff that keeps coming back again and again in the song. There are 10 songs in all in this Cd and all are top notch pickings. (Pun intended). The album closes with "Swedish Snowflake," a heartwarming piece that speaks of by-gone eras and the promise of more to come. And more is coming. We understand that Echo has been working on a new album for 2002. I am looking forward to it. Indeed! See you next month.
